The Technical Director is responsible for supervision regarding the technical requirements for Merc productions/rentals and the maintenance of the technical equipment for the theater. The Technical Director reports to the Executive Director and works in close association with the Audio Engineer, Production Directors, the Lead House Manager, and the Facilities Manager. The Tech Director is knowledgeable about Merc lighting and sound systems and can facilitate light and sound plots for Merc events. Approximate schedule: 40 hours per each fully-produced show, 30 hours for the LBHS partnership, 10 hours per each Readers' Theater production, and roughly 5 hours per week for 42 weeks of the year for staff meetings/rental productions/etc.
Duties Include:
Technical needs of the Merc Playhouse:
- Organizes and maintains lighting equipment in good order. Including climbing high ladders to adjust/clean lights as needed.
- Assesses possibilities for upgrading the technical equipment.
- Researches sources for equipment purchases, new and used.
- Prepares purchase orders for new or used equipment as necessary to replace obsolete or broken equipment.
- Recommends, recruits and trains personnel for running lights and sound.
- Maintains storage in good order, aware of stock in the storage unit.
Technical needs of our renters:
- Assesses renter’s needs and is available as needed.
- Operates equipment or provides instructions for operation of equipment for each production and rental, and/or trains or provides instructions to personnel.
Technical needs of our productions:
- Hangs/programs the lighting plot for all productions and rentals.
- Advises/facilitates building sets.
- Attends production meetings as required by the production manager or stage manager.
- Supervises strikes and/or provides detailed instructions/personnel for strikes.
- Attends required rehearsals and trains personnel at tech rehearsal.
- Maintains painting equipment necessary for stage reset.

- Submits a written report each month for the Board meeting.
Front of House Operations:
- With knowledge of operations, fills in when needed for Box Office during Merc events and rental events.
- Assists and follows Lead House Manager’s lead when filling in at the Front of House for Merc events.

The Audio Engineer is responsible for assisting the Technical Director in maintaining and operating the technical equipment of the theater. Audio Engineer reports to the Technical Director and assists in hanging/programming lights as needed with knowledge of the theater’s lighting and sound equipment. Audio Engineer is responsible for finding/creating and programming all sound cues for Merc productions and rentals as needed. 15 hours per full production, 5 hours per RT productions, and roughly 5 hours per week for 42 weeks of the year for staff meetings/rental productions/etc.

- Reports to Executive Director for personnel-related issues
